Triggers That May Cause Rosacea Flare-ups

Over 14 million people in the U.S. are living with rosacea, a common skin condition that causes redness and flushing, as well as sometimes pimple-like bumps. Rosacea most commonly appears on the face, but can affect any part of the body. In more severe cases, rosacea can even lead to some eye problems. For many of our patients, rosacea can be incredibly uncomfortable and even embarrassing at times. For anyone suffering, you might try to be aware of foods, emotions and activities that may cause flare-ups. Making some simple changes can help reduce flares dramatically and help you get better results from treatments and prevent your rosacea from worsening over time. Here are some common triggers:

  • Alcohol, especially red wine
  • Spicy foods
  • Hot drinks/foods (temperature)
  • Exercise
  • Hot baths/saunas
  • Sun
  • Sudden change in emotion – for example, laughing or embarrassment
  • Chronic cough
  • Stress/anxiety
  • Skin and hair products
  • Heat/Cold

If you or someone you know is struggling with rosacea symptoms, our team at Mindful Dermatology is here to help with the appropriate treatment, including prescribing medicine or in-office treatment like laser therapy.
