Annual Skin Check in Dallas, TX

There are a lot of factors which can combine to harm your skin. Sun and environmental exposure, underlying medical conditions, medications, and exposure to allergens can all cause cellular changes. Your dermatologist can help identify skin damage and cellular changes early, and it all begins with an annual skin check.

During an annual skin check, your dermatologist will check your face and body for abnormal tissue, looking for skin that is:

  • Scaly and itchy
  • Red and irritated
  • Bleeding or oozing
  • Damaged and not healing

An important part of the annual skin check is to check your moles. Most people have moles, and most moles are normal, however, there are some characteristics of moles which may indicate skin cancer. Your dermatologist will be looking for moles that are:

  • Larger than 6 millimeters in diameter
  • Poorly defined, and have irregular borders
  • Asymmetrical and irregular
  • Painful, swollen, red, or itchy
  • Bleeding, itching, or oozing
  • New, or recurrent after being previously removed

If your dermatologist identifies abnormal moles, your dermatologist may take a sample of tissue or remove the entire mole for a biopsy. The biopsy determines whether the mole is normal, precancerous, or cancerous. If the mole is cancerous, your dermatologist may recommend:

  • Cryosurgery, to freeze the tissue
  • Scaling and curettage, to shave the mole
  • Excision, to remove the entire mole
  • MOHS micrographic surgery, to remove and examine the mole tissue, layer-by-layer under a microscope

An annual skin check is a vital way to help ensure the health of your skin and to fight skin cancer. In between dermatology visits and annual skin checks, remember to practice these important tips to prevent skin cancer:

  • Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15
  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 if you are outside for an extended period
  • Wear lip balm with sunscreen
  • Wear protective clothing including hats and sunglasses
